In-the-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids

In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids are a major style of custom-fitted hearing aid, particularly popular with patients seeking a discreet, easy-to-handle solution. Like the custom moulds used with RIC (Receiver-in-Canal) hearing aids, ITEs are made using an impression of your ear. The key difference is that ITE hearing aids are worn entirely within the ear, with no components sitting behind it.

All of the microphones, speaker (receiver), and electronics are built into a single unit that sits either inside the ear canal or in the bowl of the ear (concha). ITE hearing aids are more likely to be battery operated, although there are many models that now offer rechargeable options.

Types of ITE Hearing Aids

ITE hearing aids come in a range of sizes, from the more visible full-shell style to completely invisible models. These are typically categorised by size, from largest to smallest:

  • Full-Shell ITE: Fills the entire outer bowl (concha) of the ear

  • Half-Shell ITE: Fills only the lower portion of the concha

  • In-the-Canal (ITC): Fits within the ear canal and slightly protrudes

  • Completely-in-Canal (CIC): Sits entirely within the ear canal, with little to no visibility

  • Invisible-in-Canal (IIC): Deep-fitting, completely hidden in the canal, and nearly invisible when worn

Advantages of ITE Hearing Aids

ITE hearing aids offer a number of practical benefits, especially for those with specific physical or aesthetic preferences:

  • Custom Fit: Each ITE is made to match the exact shape of your ear, creating a secure, comfortable fit.

  • No Behind-the-Ear Component: Ideal for patients who prefer not to wear anything over the ear for reasons of comfort or appearance.

  • Ease of Use: Larger ITE styles (like full-shell or half-shell) are often easier to insert and remove, making them a great choice for those with reduced dexterity or vision.

  • Discreet Appearance: The smaller ITE styles, particularly CIC and IIC hearing aids, are among the most discreet hearing aids available—popular with those seeking near-invisible solutions.

Many people seeking private hearing care come with the goal of finding the smallest, most discreet hearing aid possible. However, it's important to note that not everyone is a suitable candidate for CIC or IIC styles. Factors such as the degree of hearing loss, ear canal shape, communication needs, and lifestyle will influence what style is appropriate. Your audiologist will guide you through this during your consultation.

Limitations to Consider

While ITEs are an excellent option for many, there are some limitations to be aware of:

  • Fewer Features in Smaller Styles: Due to space constraints, connectivity options (e.g. Bluetooth for mobile phones or accessories), telecoils, and advanced noise-reduction features may not be available—especially in smaller models.

  • Less Effective in Noisy Environments: ITE hearing aids may not perform as well in challenging listening situations compared to RIC models.

  • Occlusion Effect: Because ITEs sit inside and seal the ear canal, some users experience a sensation of the ear feeling "blocked" or report a hollow, echo-like sound. This is known as occlusion.

  • Reduced Natural Acoustics: Wearing an ITE hearing aid can reduce the natural benefit provided by the shape of the outer ear (known as the pinna effect), which can slightly affect spatial awareness and sound quality.

Your audiologist can help reduce or mitigate some of these issues through expert fitting, fine-tuning, and real-ear measurement.
