What Is Earwax and When Should It Be Removed?

Earwax (also known as cerumen) is a natural, protective substance in your ear canals. However, if too much builds up, it can cause:

  • A blocked or muffled sensation

  • Hearing loss

  • Discomfort or pain

  • Feedback or poor sound quality in hearing aids

If you're experiencing these symptoms, an ear examination can determine whether excess earwax may be contributing to the problem. You can also read our guide Do I Need Earwax Removal? for more information about the signs and symptoms of excessive earwax.

How We Remove Earwax

Microsuction is the technique we use most commonly to remove earwax. Using magnification and direct visual guidance, a small suction device is used to carefully remove wax from the ear canal.

Depending on the amount, consistency and position of the wax, we may also use fine instruments or water irrigation where appropriate. The method used will depend on your ears and individual circumstances.

Before Your Appointment

For the best results, we recommend softening your wax with olive oil drops for 5–7 days before your visit, unless advised otherwise.

More Than Just Earwax Removal

Finchley Hearing is an independent audiology practice, not simply an earwax removal clinic. That means if your symptoms turn out not to be caused by earwax, you're already in the right place to receive expert advice about your hearing and guidance on the most appropriate next steps.

Whether your ears are blocked with wax or your hearing difficulties have another cause, our aim is to help you understand what's going on and recommend the most appropriate next steps. Where appropriate, this may include a comprehensive hearing assessment to investigate your hearing in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does private earwax removal cost in North London?

Our earwax removal fee is £69 per appointment, or £49 when combined with another service. Please see our full price list below for further information.

Is microsuction earwax removal safe?

Yes, microsuction is widely considered the safest and most effective method for earwax removal in adults, and is especially well suited for those who wear hearing aids or have sensitive ears. Because the procedure is carried out under direct visual guidance, the audiologist can see the ear canal and wax during removal. As with any earwax-removal technique, there can be potential risks, which will be discussed where appropriate.

Does earwax removal hurt?

Microsuction is generally well tolerated and should not be painful. Some people may find it slightly uncomfortable, particularly if the ears are very blocked or sensitive, but we always proceed carefully and can stop at any time if needed.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

We do our best to offer prompt appointments, including same-day slots when available. However, for the most comfortable and effective earwax removal, we usually recommend softening the wax with olive oil drops for 5–7 days before your visit. Please contact us to check current availability and for advice on the best timing for your appointment.

Can I book earwax removal at home?

Yes. We offer home-visit earwax removal for patients in Finchley and selected North London areas, subject to availability.

What happens if my ears aren't blocked with wax?

If your ear canals are clear but you're still experiencing reduced or muffled hearing, we'll explain what we've found and advise you on the appropriate next steps. As Finchley Hearing is an independent audiology practice, a hearing assessment can also be arranged where appropriate.
